    One of the greatest artists of the northern

    RENAISSANCE, Albrecht Dürer introduced the

    artistic innovations of the Italian Renaissance to

    German art. His new style was a fusion of the

    German realistic tradition with the Italian ideal

    of beauty.

    Albrecht Dürer was born in NUREMBERG on

    May 21, 1471, the son of the goldsmith Albrecht

    the Elder. Demonstrating talent at an early age,

    he apprenticed under the master painter and

    woodcut designer Michael Wolgemut. After

    traveling to the Rhineland and the Netherlands,

    by early 1492 he had settled in Basel, where he

    worked as a woodcut designer. In the scenes of

    daily life that he produced he demonstrated the

    influence of the prominent German artist Martin

    Schongauer, a major representative of Rhenish

    graphic art. In 1493 he painted the famous

    self-portrait in which he appeared as a young

    romantic artist. After returning to Nuremberg in

    1494, he married Agnes Frey, who unfortunately

    did not appreciate his expanding intellectual

    interests and friends. Leaving for Italy that same

    year, he visited Venice, Padua, and Mantua. In

    Padua he spent some time with his friend, the

    humanist Willibald PIRCKHEIMER. Dürer studied

    the Renaissance masters and soon learned how to

    paint his figures with anatomical exactness, classical

    pathos, and harmony. An interest in art theory

    also developed, and his travels over the Alps

    inspired excellent landscape drawings.

    Having assimilated the spirit of classical art,

    he returned to Nuremberg in 1495 and opened

    his own workshop. There he completed the

    famous Apocalypse cycle from the Book of Revelation,

    which with broad contrasts of black and

    white revealed the destructive forces of the ride

    of the Three Horsemen and an atmosphere of

    imminent doom. During this period Dürer also

    produced a number of portraits: Oswolt Krell

    (1499), Dream of the Doctor (after 1497), and one

    of his most popular, Prodigal Son (ca. 1496). In

    Nemesis (150102) he revealed his interest in

    perspective, human proportion, and complicated

    humanistic allegory.

    On his next trip to Italy in 1505 he was profoundly

    influenced by the art of Venice, where he

    became acquainted with artists, humanists, and

    noblemen. His Christ among the Doctors, however,

    was probably executed in Rome. Back in Nuremberg

    he carved a number of large altarpieces,

    including the Heller Altarpiece (150709), the Adoration

    of the Trinity (1511), and the Martyrdom of the

    Ten Thousand (1508). From 1513 to 1520 his

    humanistic interests and his knowledge of classical

    philosophy, especially Neoplatonism, were

    manifested in some of his most famous master

    engravings: Knights Death and the Devil (1513), St.

    Jerome in His Study (1514), and Melancholia (or

    originally, Melencolia, 1514). These engravings

    were allegories of virtues of the three principal

    spheres of human activity, the soldier, the con-

    templative, and the intellectual, reflecting the

    widening horizons of the age in respect to the

    study of man and nature. Depicted in his study, St.

    Jerome, who provided the official Latin Vulgate

    translation of the Bible from the Greek into Latin,

    was a symbol for humanists of the combination of

    ancient cultural values and divine inspiration.

    Depicted with the tools of science and the crafts,

    Melancholia, a female figure overcome with

    depression, is brooding over mans failure to

    fathom the secrets of nature. Dürer also published

    books on nature, the study of perspective, and

    proportion of the human body.

    One of Martin LUTHERs humanist supporters,

    Dürer became involved in the conflicts of the

    Reformation. In 1525 the city of Nuremberg

    decided to officially adopt Lutheranism, and the

    PEASANTSWAR ended with the defeat of the rebellion.

    In celebration of these events Dürer painted

    the Four Apostles, Sts. John and Peter, Mark and

    Paul and presented it to the Town Council. Not

    surprisingly, these apostles appeared to be residents

    of the city, another of them being Philip

    MELANCHTHON, a colleague of Luthers. In the panels

    Dürer included quotations from these saints

    containing criticisms of false prophets who were

    springing up to challenge the new faith.

    The diversity of Dürers achievements make

    him a typical Renaissance man. In addition to his

    paintings and engravings, he published books

    manifesting his interest in the study of nature

    and the study of perspective and proportion of

    the human body. Creating modern tools for contemporary

    German artists, his art translated the

    Italian Renaissance into what northerners could

    understand and apply. His influence was perhaps

    the greatest of any of the northern artists.
